Prince George Music Reviews

There’s been a complicated history of arts publications, both on and offline, in Prince George over the last decade. The latest (and best funded) venture into this landscape is The Scene PG. Published by the daily newspaper Prince George Citizen, it currently functions as an online band directory/coming events calendar and a biannual glossy distributed […]

My Favourite Music of 2010

Over a week in to 2011, and I’m finally posting my favourites of 2010. Thing is, I’ve had the list written up since before Christmas, it’s just that I did it as a three-part radio show that I’ve been producing prior to posting this. Fortunately, that’s included in this post (at the bottom — and […]

Ex.fm may have just found the holy grail of music blogging, and the missing link for the Tumblr bookmarklet

In addition to noting, you can now post songs directly to Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. It’s the simplest way to share the songs you love with your existing friends and followers. When you visit these sites, all songs posted by the people you follow will be playable right there on the page. They will also […]

Semi-Charmed Life and the Art of the Song-That-Everyone-Knows

So for the second time in a week, I’m posting something I wrote for my music blog. I’ve decided I’m only going to do this for posts that I feel fit here as well as there– straight-up music posts are staying there, but things that go a bit deeper go here, too. Here it is: […]

This Is What I Saw Yesterday: Bedouin Soundclash

performing at UNBC for back-to-school. It was a cool night, and turn-out was less than it could have been, but they put on a good show. Highlight was probably when a fire alarm was set off and the beer garden had to be emptied out. As the lead singer said: “Let’s see how long it […]

Suburban Girls – An Album Review of Wisconsin Dream Guitar

As you may or may not know, I have a music blog that allows me to get me “you gotta listen to this song” instincts out of the way without clogging up my personal blog over here. But today I’m making an exception. The band is Wisconsin Dream Guitar: Silver Fall by wisconsindreamguitar It’s a […]

I Am Canadian?

Last week, I sat in as a co-host on Fresh Sheet while Rob searches for a new permanent co-host (interested takers see here). On it, we had a brief discussion on the “Canadian-ness” of a band like the Arcade Fire. As I said on the show, since the primary player in the band (Win Butler) […]

A Music Post: The Evolution of K'Naan's 'Wavin' Flag'

K’Naan is possibly the most global artist in the world today, thanks to the fact that Coke has used his song ‘Wavin’ Flag’ as their World Cup anthem and produced no less than twenty versions of the song, each with an artist aimed at targeting a different country or region. The fact that there’s twenty of these things out there, each enjoying success, intrigues me enough to hunt them all down. Get ready to feel a mixture of world unity and anger over how such a great song has been corrupted by a clear corporate message and confusion over whether or not that actually detracts from the song itself.

How Independent Music and the Internet Helped Transform a Nation

It wasn’t the Olympics that made Canadians find their pride. It was just that the internet and a new crop of independent musicians has created a generation of Canadians that aren’t aware their supposed to have an inferiority complex. Get used to it.

So Much Good Music

I haven’t been keeping up with music as much as I used to, which is ironic in light of my new job (although also changing because of it). However, this morning proved to me that 2010 is shaping up to be a bumper crop of music, particularly of the Canuck variety (although that’s been the […]

My Votes in the 2009 Bucky Awards

If you don’t know what the Bucky Awards are, they are basically a poll where fans vote for independent Candian bands in traditional and non-traditional categories. For my money, over the past three years they’ve been the most accurate representation of the best music being made. Here’s how I’m voting: Best Song I thought this […]
